As of December 2022, ButterflyMX is installed in more than 10,000 buildings and used by more than 1,000,000 apartments. But equally as impressive is the fact that ButterflyMX today consists of more than 200 hardworking, innovative employees across the United States, Europe, and beyond. These are the people who drive our company forward and push the limits on what’s possible in access control.

So to celebrate the people who make ButterflyMX what is it today, we spotlight one employee each month. For December 2022, we’re showcasing Aaron Lee, a Data Analyst who gives us a peek into his role at ButterflyMX and shares why he loves working here.

This employee spotlight covers:

Position: Data Analyst, Data Team

In a few sentences, tell us about what you do here at ButterflyMX.

I provide analytics in the form of reporting and dashboards to answer internal business intelligence questions. I like to think of data analytics as a product for internal stakeholders — my job is to make sure I deliver reports that most efficiently answer the stakeholders’ questions.

What’s your favorite part about working at ButterflyMX?

ButterflyMX has cultivated an environment of individuals who take pride in our work, and it’s amazing to see what can be done when there’s a crisis on our hands.

Recently there was a small issue that was started over the weekend, and amazingly, tons of us stepped in and looked into it, resolving the issue in a few hours. I think this shows the pride we take in our work, and the collaborative atmosphere is definitely contagious.

What’s the most significant thing you’ve learned while working here?

Everything that I know about data analytics today on a professional level, I’d say is thanks to my time working with the data team at ButterflyMX. The most significant thing I’ve learned is to treat data as a product for internal stakeholders and to create the best product I possibly can.

What’s great is, with experience, I’m getting better at handling all aspects of my responsibilities within ButterflyMX’s data stack, so there’s always room for improvement.

Watch a day in the life of a ButterflyMX employee:

What’s your proudest accomplishment so far during your time at ButterflyMX?

I would have to say that it’s definitely been my contribution towards building the finance dashboard with Thomas Terenzi and Ilya Evdokimov, two of my co-workers from the finance team.

I was first brought onto ButterflyMX as an intern with the main responsibilities of replicating reporting that had been previously done in Chartio over in Sigma, our new BI platform. But the finance dashboard is the first big project with my name on it that’s having a pretty significant impact on the way the ship is being steered. To this day, it’s consistently being improved, and the level of analytics is only getting better, so I’m definitely proud of the work we’ve done on that.

Tell us about your favorite day/event at ButterflyMX. What makes it so special/memorable?

I’d have to say my favorite event was the on-site that I had with the entire data team in June. It was special because we had a small work issue that required hands on deck, and it was magical to see the team solving something together in-person for the first time that would’ve otherwise been done online.

At the end of the day, we had our first in-person happy hour at Oscar Wilde’s, which is a fantastic bar right next to our NYC office. It was a surreal experience being able to do everything in person with my team and I hope we have more on-site events in the future.

What has been the best part about working remotely? The most challenging?

The best part about working remotely is not having to routinely get dressed and ready to go out. Sometimes the first thing I’ll see when I wake up will be my monitor, and that’s definitely a huge perk to having the privilege of working from home.

On the other hand, because we do have the option of working from different locations, team communication can be challenging when we’re working across different time zones. I’m sure that’s one of, if not the most common issues that companies with remote work are facing, but with all the flexibility of working remotely, if someone asked me if I’d rather work remotely or on-site, I think we know what I’d pick.

3 fun facts about Aaron

1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I could live anywhere, it’d be NYC. I’m visiting right now but it definitely feels like the right city for me. There’s so much to do here and most of my high school and college friends are here so there’s an endless list of things I could do on a Saturday night. Plus I love not having to own a car to get around!

2. Do you have a secret talent (*cough* superpower) you want people to know about?

My secret talent is being able to crack people’s backs like a chiropractor! My friends ask me to do it to them all the time.

3. What is your favorite thing to do after work or on the weekends?

My favorite thing after work is definitely either getting dinner with friends or hopping online for a few games of Valorant.
