In a few sentences, tell us about what you do here at ButterflyMX.

As the Senior Vice President of Engineering at ButterflyMX, I lead the engineering team in developing innovative software solutions that power our smart building access systems. My role involves ensuring the scalability and reliability of our products as well as fostering collaboration between cross-functional teams to deliver impactful, user-centric solutions. I also focus on optimizing engineering processes, mentoring talent, and aligning our technology strategy with the company’s long-term goals.

What’s your favorite part about working at ButterflyMX?

My favorite part of working at ButterflyMX is working alongside a talented, passionate team that drives innovation every day. The collaborative environment fosters creativity, and it’s inspiring to see how we support each other to build impactful products.

I also love the fast-paced nature of our work–delivering solutions that not only solve real-world problems but also push the boundaries of smart building technology, all while maintaining a high standard of quality and execution.

What’s the most significant thing you’ve learned while working here?

One of the most significant things I have learned is the power of cross-functional collaboration. Working closely with product, design, and operations teams has highlighted how crucial it is to align technical initiatives with business goals to drive innovation.

I have also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of fostering a culture of adaptability and continuous improvement, especially in a rapidly evolving industry like smart access control. It is all about building resilient teams that can not only execute but also think strategically.

What’s your proudest accomplishment so far during your time at ButterflyMX?

My proudest accomplishment has been spearheading the development of our next-generation intercom software. This project was initiated shortly after I joined the organization, and it has since revolutionized our product line by enhancing both functionality and user experience.

Tell us about your favorite day/event at ButterflyMX. What makes it so special/memorable?

One of my favorite events at ButterflyMX was our Product and Engineering offsite in New York.

It was incredibly special to meet so many talented colleagues in person for the first time. We spent a few days collaborating, exchanging ideas, and building stronger relationships outside of the usual virtual setting. The energy in the room was contagious, and it reinforced how important in-person connection can be for teamwork and innovation. It was a perfect mix of productivity and fun, making it a truly memorable experience.

What has been the best part about working remotely? The most challenging?

The best part about working remotely has been the flexibility to see my boys a lot more, including having the opportunity to coach them in basketball. It has been amazing to be present for those special moments. On the flip side, the most challenging part has been managing the noise and distractions when they are home from school while I am trying to focus on work.

Watch a day in the life of a ButterflyMX employee:

Fun facts about Joe

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I could live anywhere in the world, I would choose El Salvador, as my wife and her family are from there. We also had a beautiful vacation there this year and already want to go back. However, a more realistic option would be San Luis Obispo, California, where I always enjoy visiting. Being near the coast and wine country sounds like a good place to retire.

Do you have a secret talent (*cough* superpower) you want people to know about?

I am fairly boring. My special talent involves being able to wake up without an alarm every single day.

What is your favorite thing to do after work or on the weekends?

Finding time to watch the Dodgers or Lakers depending on the time of the year. Lots of sports with the boys too, whether I am coaching or driving them to a practice, game, gym or field.
