Meet Tom
- Location: Boston, Massachusetts
- Position: VP, FP&A
- Start Date: October 26, 2020
In a few sentences, tell us about what you do here at ButterflyMX.
As a VP of FP&A, I concentrate on financial planning and management. This means I spend my time developing and managing financial forecasts and companywide performance analytics to assess performance while monitoring the company’s overall financial health.
The goal is to uncover business insights to drive us towards adopting best-in-class practices. Then, I collaborate with the management team and investors to ensure we are making the right decisions to meet our short-term and long-term financial objectives.
What’s your favorite part about working at ButterflyMX?
The best part about working here is the ability to make meaningful contributions to the company’s success while growing with it. ButterflyMX employees often wear multiple hats, take on different types of responsibilities, and get to see the direct results of their efforts.
What’s the most significant thing you’ve learned while working here?
I’ve learned that adaptability is so important. In this environment, things change rapidly, and being able to pivot quickly and embrace change has been crucial to my success.
What’s your proudest accomplishment so far during your time at ButterflyMX?
I’m so proud of and fortunate to be part of our overall finance team’s growth and accomplishments over the past 3+ years. We’ve invested in new financial systems, spent time developing and maturing processes, and have grown the team significantly.
These investments are leading to improved business outcomes in terms of speed, reliability, and predictability. It’s great to see how far we’ve come and I’m excited to keep the momentum going.
What has been the best part about working remotely? The most challenging?
Working remotely gives me the freedom to juggle parenting responsibilities while being able to focus on work with reduced commuting time.
The most challenging aspect is not having the ability to have impromptu conversations that lead to brainstorming sessions, quick problem-solving, and relationship-building opportunities. I try to mitigate this by scheduling virtual catch-ups but sometimes it’s just not the same as in-person ones.

Fun facts about Tom
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
At one point, years ago, there was a work opportunity that required me to move to Ireland. My wife and I were excited about the opportunity to live in such a great place. We loved visiting there several times and have had fun embracing the culture, but it never came to fruition.
Do you have a secret talent (*cough* superpower) you want people to know about?
I’m still waiting for a secret talent to rear its head.
What is your favorite thing to do after work or on the weekends?
We’ve formed a tight-knit group of toddler parents in our neighborhood, and it’s made a huge difference in socializing and support. We tend to head to parks, breweries, and local events together. When my wife and I manage to take a break from parenting, we like to go to Celtics games, catch concerts, and try new local restaurants.
