How it works
1. Install our Vehicle Access Reader at any gate or garage that you would like to provide property access to.
2. When a vehicle with a Windshield Tag drives up, the reader scans the tag and opens the gate or garage.
3. Our system stores a time- and date-stamped record of when the gate or garage is opened.

Functionality
How does a Vehicle Access System open gates & garages?
There are two ways to open a ButterflyMX Vehicle Reader-controlled gate or garage: via the ButterflyMX app and with a Windshield Tag.
How do I enter a vehicle entry point with the ButterflyMX mobile app?
Open the ButterflyMX app and swipe the ‘open door/gate’ button from left to right to open the gate or garage.
How do the Windshield Tags open the gate or garage?
Drive up to any property entry point fitted with our Vehicle Reader. The reader automatically scans your Windshield Tag and opens the gate or garage.
Can I turn off access to the Vehicle Reader?
Yes, you can do so by logging into your administrator account or by contacting our support team, either will allow you to turn off the resident’s Windshield Tag and mobile access to the Vehicle Reader.
Windshield Tags
How do Windshield Tags work with the Vehicle Reader?
Residents & tenants are issued a Windshield Tag to place on their vehicles. That tag is associated with the resident/tenant in the ButterflyMX OS database. When the resident/tenant drives up to a gate or garage with the Vehicle Reader installed, that tag is automatically scanned, and compared to the permissions assigned to that resident/tenant. If they have access permissions to that gate/garage, it will open; otherwise, it will not open. Each time a Windshield Tag is scanned, a time- and date-stamped record of that scan is stored in the ButterflyMX OS for review.
Can I turn off Windshield Tag access?
Yes, if you’re an administrator, you can log into your ButterflyMX OS and change access permissions for Windshield Tags — any changes will be instantly made. And if permissions are revoked, previously issued Windshield Tags will no longer provide access to your gate or garage.

How do I program the Vehicle Reader and Windshield Tags?
Installers should follow the instructions for the Vehicle Reader and Windshield Tag found on our installation resources page or work with our support team to program and install the Vehicle Reader and tags. Please reach out to support@butterflymx.com if you have any issues.
Does the Vehicle Reader work with the ButterflyMX mobile app?
Yes! The Vehicle Access System is fully compatible with the ButterflyMX mobile app.

How is the Vehicle Reader powered?
The Vehicle Reader is powered by the ButterflyMX Access Controller, which requires a 12 VDC power source.
Can the Vehicle Reader and Windshield Tags be used outside?
Yes, the Vehicle Reader is IP66 outdoor-rated and can withstand all outdoor weather conditions if the installation guidelines are met. Windshield Tags must be placed inside the vehicle and visible from the dashboard.
