Thank you for your interest in writing a guest post for the ButterflyMX blog.
Our website has had millions of visitors over the years, pinning us as the leading source for all things property technology (proptech) and real estate. And we’re always looking for talented writers to contribute to our high-ranking blog.
We’d love to hear from you if you have exceptional knowledge that you would like to share with our large audience of real estate developers, owners, property managers, and residents. Specifically, we’re looking for contributors with exquisite writing skills and the ability to explain complex concepts in an accessible and simple way.
Before starting to write, please review the entire guest blogging guide below — it explains the types of content we’re looking for, and our content style & writing guidelines.
This guide covers:
- The essentials of every post we publish
- The different types of posts we accept
- What we don’t accept
- The fine print
The essentials of every post we publish
We consider successful guest contributions comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and compelling. Most importantly, the posts must teach our audience something new about the world of real estate and proptech. While we tend to lean toward content about specific real estate strategies or tactics, that’s not all that our blog covers.
We’re also interested in publishing any topic that real estate professionals care about, which includes things like:
- Economics
- Team development
- Marketing
- Finance
- Design
- Technology
- Industry trends
We look for a few things in every guest post we publish. First and foremost, we only accept original content, meaning that your submission cannot be published anywhere else.
Here are the basic editorial guidelines that we ask all guest contributors to follow:
Technical requirements
- We only accept completed drafts with a minimum of 1,000 words.
- Each post should have one (1) target key phrase. Here’s an SEO Guide from Google to help you learn more about SEO.
- You should always use quality data, quotations, and outside content in your article, linking to its source.
- We highly encourage using .gov, .edu, and .org websites as your sources.
- Post may include up to two (2) outbound links to the contributor’s website domain. We will add “nofollow” and “sponsored” relationship attributes to both links.
- One (1) link within the content body
- One (1) link in the contributor’s bio
- Writers must provide a contributor bio (no more than 50 words)
- Optional: Photo of the contributor to publish alongside bio
Formatting rules
- Only the title should have an H1 heading format. The title must include the keyphrase you’re targeting.
- Properly use subheading formatting (H2, H3, and H4 tags) to organize content.
- We encourage using bulleted and numbered lists to make content easier to read.
- We advise using numbered lists only when the order of the content is important (i.e., step-by-step instructions, listicles).
- The contributor must submit the final draft of their blog post in a Google Doc.
Writing guidelines
- The post should not be overly sales-y or marketing-heavy
- Any mention of the company should be naturally incorporated and flow well in the content.
- The post should be informative, insightful, and relevant to our audience, which includes property:
- Managers
- Owners
- Developers/Investors
- Installers
- Integrators
- We encourage contributors to read some of our published blog content to get a sense of the tone and style we publish

The different types of posts we accept
Not all pieces of content are created equal. Over the years, we’ve pinpointed the types of posts that our audience enjoys — almost down to the science. This section details the three types of posts that perform the best on our blog.
A caveat: We may publish posts that don’t fall into any of these categories from time to time. However, your post has the best chance of being accepted if it matches one of these formats.
Here are some of our most successful blog post types:
Data-driven
Numbers can tell great stories. Data-driven posts are your interpretation of the data you collected or found, explaining how it applies to the real estate industry.
These posts should include hard metrics, actionable insights, and thorough explanations of what the numbers mean. Your data analysis should be so clear that a fifth-grader could understand it. And the topic or conclusion should be significant enough to make real estate professionals want to take tangible actions after reading it.
Thought leadership
Are you an expert in the property management or real estate sectors? Share your wisdom with our wider community.
Thought leadership posts give readers in-depth tactical takeaways that they can implement at their properties. These posts are supported by relevant and recent examples, original graphics, and current data. Include your original insights and tips to engage the reader and leave them wanting to learn more.
Infographics
Is there a complicated concept or idea that you think everyone in the real estate industry should know? And do you explain things better with pictures and graphics than with words? Then send us a post with infographics.
An infographic post should have an introductory paragraph, followed by embedded media. Each graph or image should be accompanied by a paragraph or two explaining it. Remember, we always want our posts to be tied back to the real estate industry.
So, make sure to include a conclusion that explains the significance of the information provided by the infographics. The conclusion should consist of the key takeaways you want the reader to grasp from the post.
Submissions that we don’t accept
There are some things we simply can’t accept, which include:
- A topic that we’ve already written about. Please do a thorough search of our blog before sending your submission.
- A poorly written blog post with multiple spelling and grammar mistakes. Although our team may copyedit guest posts before publishing them, we can’t & won’t make substantial edits or rewrite the content for you.
- A “spammy” post — including those for a link-building scheme or overly promotional for your company, organization, or brand.
- Any content containing offensive and inaccurate information or critical of individuals or companies.
The fine print
- Any content that is plagiarized or reposted anywhere else on the internet will be immediately removed from our blog, and you will lose your writing privileges.
- Submissions must meet the ButterflyMX Content Team’s quality standards to get published. The publishing process may take up to two weeks, and the publication date may exceed this timeline based on the needs of our other editorial priorities.
- Submissions must be submitted in a Google Doc with the permissions set to “anyone with the link” and emailed directly to the editor you’re working with.
- The ButterflyMX Content Team reserves the right to remove, edit and adapt your guest blog content as we see fit and update it in the future for accuracy and comprehensiveness.
- Also, ButterflyMX reserves the right to include calls-to-action to ButterflyMX content, including but not limited to email newsletters, ebooks, and marketing materials.
- The ButterflyMX Marketing team reserves the right to use guest blog posts across our marketing channels as we see fit, including but not limited to ButterflyMX’s social media channels.
